What Happened to Crew Resource Management?

“There was a time not so long ago when pilots spoke of crew resource management (CRM) frequently and often. Nowadays, the term CRM — and its traditional doctrine — has fallen out of favor and is being used to a lesser extent than ever before.”

This article by Shannon Forrest published by the Flight Safety Foundation in 2018 espouses the author’s view that the standing of CRM training, its perceived standards and credibility, has declined over the past decade. It was written before the COVID-induced explosion of video-conference style training introduced another blow to face-to-face team training, and there is still plenty in this critique that can be unpacked over 5 years later.

“The cornerstone of early CRM training was intensive introspection done publically in a seminar style format. One question that must be asked is whether an e-learning format is appropriate to deliver CRM training… “
