Situational Awareness: The science behind the theory.

Source: ResearchGate

Situational awareness is a concept that is very familiar to the aviation community in an applied sense, but have you ever taken a deeper look at its provenance in scientific research and the development of the theory behind what we refer to every day simply as “S-A”? We bring you a summary of the science behind the concept of situational awareness in this accessible paper by the foundational author behind the model of situational awareness, Dr Mica Endsley.

Endsley is widely recognized as a pioneer and world leader in the study and application of situation awareness. She is a former President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and former Chief Scientist for the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Endsley is the author of over 200 scientific articles and reports on situation awareness, decision-making, and human-system integration and is widely cited in professional journals.

This scientific paper from 2000 entitled THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS OF SITUATION AWARENESS: A CRITICAL REVIEW offers a useful summary of the concept which was written five years on from the first of Endsley’s (1995) seminal papers on SA.
